GS Mariners – Why not here at Lake Travis?
See post below about GS Mariner Programs. They are looking for volunteers! Maybe we could get the Marines to Lake Travis. Please forward this info to anyone who you think may be interested in sailing or volunteering to teach sailing.
Ahoy Maties!
I wanted to share a little bit (or a lot!) about our Mariner program in case we have new people on this list. If you would like a Mariner to come talk to your troop or SU, we will try to arrange it. Contact us at ctxmariners@gmail.com
Our Mariner program is celebrating our 7th year! Our Mariner program is the ultimate adventure leadership program. In addition to learning to sail at a reasonable cost, the girls learn to be leaders by teaching other girls to sail. Sailing is an excellent way to teach girls courage, confidence and character! We sail in the spring and fall, and encourage girls to attend sailing summer camp. All events are at Camp Kachina on Lake Belton. Our Mariner program is open to girls 6th grade and above. Every spring, we invite 5th graders to attend to see if sailing is for them and to see if they want to go to sailing camp! We are certified US Sailing Instructors and help the girls achieve US Sailing Level 1 ratings.
Although troops can attend events, we strongly encourage individual girls to sign up for our events.
OH! ADULTS Did I mention we also need VOLUNTEERS!!! ?? Want to be out on the water? We need motor boat drivers (OTJ training provided.) Sailing instructors or people who have any sailing experience. Interested in volunteering? contact us at ctxmariners@gmail.com..
Our spring sailing events are open for registration. Safety Wise adults are provided for weekends. Adults are required to attend Day Sails.. Advanced Mariner Weekends: Girls that have passed their Mariner rating or have sailing experience are invited to the Advanced Weekends where they will sail on their own one day, and teach new or beginning girls. These girls are from all over the Central Texas area and are the core of our program.
Day sails are for girls to see if sailing is for them or to continue to work on sailing skills for beginners.
Sailing takes months and even years to master! STEM, physical and emotional experiences, being out on the water in nature, feeling the wind in your hair and according to the girls… a way to “get away from it all!”, sailing is an addictive sport. I got hooked the minute I was on a Hobie Cat in Lubbock, Texas when I was 19 yrs. old!
Girls will be able to continue in their sailing abilities to larger boats. The girls start out on Sunfish type boats. We have a Capri 14.2 sloop and opportunities are offered to sail larger keel boats. Sailing is often considered a sport for rich, old, white men. :o)). All the more reason to promote a sailing program for girls! Our GS sailing camp is less than $500! Most camps that have sailing are over $1000 a week! What a bargain! Check out our FB page.
