2013 Gold Award Recipients Honored at Council and Service Unit Ceremonies

Four area Ambassador Girl Scouts were honored for earning Gold Awards during separate Council and Service Unit ceremonies.  The Council Recognition Ceremony was held on Saturday, April 27 in Round Rock and the Lake Hills Service Unit Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 2 in Hudson Bend.  The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouts.

Audrey Housson, Troop 1291 (Texas Star SU), Kylie Moden, Troop 86, McKenzie Speight, Troop 86 and Erin Swisher, Troop 86 each earned the Gold Award after dedicating over 80 hours to the endeavor.  The Gold Award emphasizes the creation of positive and lasting solutions for communities in need.  All of the award recipients are seniors at Lake Travis High School.

Audrey Housson’s project, Take a Hike, focused on mapping the trails in the Lake Pointe greenbelt and placing trail head markers to allow easier access and navigation for greenbelt visitors.  Audrey moved to the Bee Caves/Lakeway area from Hayes County five years ago, but opted to stay with her Texas Star Service Unit troop.

Kylie Moden’s project, deCAREate, served the Seton Southwest Hospital by decorating and fulfilling its aesthetic and decor needs.  The decor focused on celebrating and honoring staff members and providing functional bulletin boards in the ER to help those vital employees get vital information easily.

McKenzie Speight’s project is titled Photography of LTISD’s Special Olympics 2011-12 Season.  For this project, McKenzie documented the progress of LTISD’s Special Olympians through the year.  A special slideshow was shown at the year end banquet and each Olympian was presented with a framed photo to keep.  To ensure the sustainability of the project, McKenzie created an instruction folder for future photographers.

Erin Swisher’s project focused on the tennis equipment storage shed at Lake Travis High School.  Erin built a new storage shed which is double the size of the previous shed.  The shed holds the majority of the equipment needed to help with conditioning of athletes and maintenance of the courts.

The Lake Hills Service Unit is very proud of its 2013 Gold Award winners.  Congratulations!
